UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) accepts only approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs). The requirements depend on the level of study or visa type:

1. Student Route (Higher Education)

Undergraduate:

  • Overall 5.5 – 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)

Postgraduate:

  • Overall 6.0 – 6.5 (some universities may ask for 7.0, especially in law, medicine,
    or journalism)

2. Below Degree Level (Foundation / Pre-sessional / Diploma)

  • Minimum: 4.0 overall (with no band less than 4.0)

3. UKVI for Work / Professional Registration

Skilled Worker visa / healthcare roles (e.g., nurses, doctors):

  • Usually 4.0 – 4.5 overall

Professional bodies (e.g., GMC, NMC, teaching, law):

  • May require 7.0 or above in IELTS UKVI Academic

4. UKVI General Training (Other Visas)

For family, spouse, or settlement visas:

  • A1 level (4.0) for initial applications
  • A2 level (4.0) for visa extensions
  • B1 level (4.0–5.0) for settlement/ILR and citizenship

  • IELTS UKVI can be taken in Academic or General Training, depending on purpose.
  • The test format is the same as standard IELTS, but it’s conducted under stricter
    conditions approved by UK Home Office.
